The Solstices and Equinoxes were important in Celtic traditon. They are now observed in pagan ceremonies and considered important by astrologers. The Summer Solstice (the point at which the Sun's angle is strongest in the Northern Hemisphere (weakest in the Southern), gives us the longest amount of daylight in the North (shortest in the South). It was termed "Midsummer" because, more logically, Summer began in May and lasted until August, making June 21 (thereabouts) the middle point - Mid Summer. The Origin of Father's Day

Father's Day is believed to have begun in 1909. Although there have been observances before and after this date, Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington is commonly credited with the original idea for Father's Day.
William Smart, Louise's own father, was her inspiration. William was widowed when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. In appreciation of her father's dedication to their family after the death of her mother, Louise set out to honor all fathers. Initially, Louise's idea for observing Father's Day centered around church services. Soon the idea was embraced by the Spokane Minister's Alliance, and along with the Spokane YMCA, they celebrated the first Father's Day. June 19, 1910, William Smart's birthday, was the first Father's Day. By 1916 President Woodrow Wilson had officially recognized Father's Day in the United States. Traditionally, Father's Day was celebrated by wearing a red rose honoring a living father, or a white rose honoring a father passed. This tradition has been nearly lost. The commercial observance of Father's Day dominates today's celebrations with an estimated one billion dollars spent each year for gifts.
Today, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June throughout the United States. Father's Day is also celebrated in at least 20 foreign countries. Father's Day is promoted by the Father's Day and Mother's Day Council Incorporated, founded in 1936. Each year this organization sponsors charities and an awards banquet in New York City honoring their selections for the father of the year and other exemplary fathers. The Father's Day Council is located on 47 West 34th Street, New York, NY and has kindly provided us with much of this information.

Cancer - The Caretakers of the Zodiac

Cancer is of the Water Element along with Scorpio and Pisces. Water people have strong emotions and instincts. They respond to the world around them through the emotions. They desire peace and harmony - so much so, that they may give in too much to get it. They actually need it because they pick up on the vibrations around them. This can lead to ill health if subjected to negativity for too long. In fact, they build a protective "shell" around themselves in response, but holding in and onto the emotions is what causes them problems. All Water people need to learn the lesson of "Letting Go".

Cancer is ruled by the changeable Moon and in turn, rules the 4th house of the home and family. Cancer people are family-oriented. They may take an interest in geneology, family history, a collection of some kind, and traditions in general. Some keywords for Cancer are: sympathetic, moody, nurturing, sociable, thrifty, protective. Their usually shy nature becomes a fierce fighter when a loved one is threatened. They love good food and may be a terrific cook. But try not to eat when upset because that only leads to digestive problems.

A Cancerian's health is a direct result of their emotional state. If you seem to pick up colds easily, take it as a sign that you need to do some emotional house-cleaning. Your immune system suffers from an overload of negativity. Try to find some "quiet time" each day - to let the troubles of the day dissipate and leave your body/mind. Meditating may be helpful.

Cancer's colors are pale blue (according to some) and smokey grays and greens; their gem is the pearl; their metal is silver.
