Mythology

names of celestial bodies

The tale of rulerships begins in Greek mythology - Gaea (Earth) produced Uranus, the Sky god. He is the early supreme god. He and his mother had the 12 Titans. Urged on by Gaea, they ousted Uranus by castrating him, and made the younger brother, Chronos (Saturn) the ruler. He then married his sister Rhea, but to stay in power, he ate each one of his offspring as it was born. Rhea finally had enough of that, and tricked him into eating a rock, thereby saving her son, Zeus. Zeus eventually did overthrow Chronos, who escaped to Italy, where he ruled as Saturn. So far, all the planet names have been associated with one of these gods/goddesses. Each sign has a corresponding ruler, except for Taurus and Virgo, which must share their ruler with another sign. The 4 major asteroids (Ceres, Juno, Pallas, Vesta) have now been pretty much associated with Virgo.

Hyperion is the Titan of light, married to his sister Theia. Their children are Helius (the Sun), Selene (the Moon), and Eos (the Dawn).

Metis was the Titaness of the fourth day and the planet Mercury. She presided over all wisdom and knowledge.

The Olympians are the 12 gods who were in power after overthrowing the Titans:

•Zeus (Jupiter) •Poseidon (Neptune) •Hades (Pluto) •Hestia (Vesta)
•Hera (Juno) •Ares (Mars) •(Pallas) Athena •Apollo (Sun god)
•Aphrodite (Venus) •Hermes (Mercury) •Artemis (Diana, Moon goddess) •Hephaestus

Hestia (Vesta) is Zeus sister, a virgin goddess, Goddess of the Hearth. Newborns were carried to her first. Each city had a public hearth sacred to Hestia, where the fire was never allowed to go out.

Hera (Juno) is Zeus wife and sister. She was raised by the Titans Ocean and Tethys. She is the protector of marriage and takes special care of married women.

Ares (Mars), the son of Zeus and Hera, was disliked by both parents. He is the god of war, was considered murderous and a coward. His bird is the vulture. His animal is the dog.

(Pallas) Athena is the daughter of Zeus and sprang full grown, in armor from his forehead. She is a virgin goddess, the goddess of the city, handicrafts, and agriculture. She is the embodiment of wisdom, reason, and purity.

Apollo (Sun god) is the son of Zeus and Leto. His twin sister is Artemis (Moon goddess) . He is the god of music, of healing, of light. The Archer, who can not speak a lie.

Aphrodite (Venus) is the goddess of love, desire and beauty. She has a magical girdle that compels anyone she wishes to desire her.

Hermes (Mercury) is the son of Zeus and Maia. He is Zeus' messenger. He is the fastest of the gods, wears winged sandals, a winged hat, and carries a magic wand. He is also the god of thieves and commerce. He is the guide for the dead to go to the underworld. He invented the lyre, the pipes, the musical scale, astronomy , weights and measures, boxing, gymnastics, and the care of olive trees.

Artemis (Diana) is the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Her twin brother is Apollo. She is a virgin goddess, the lady of the wild things, the huntsman of the gods, the protector of the young. (The Moon was known as Luna by the Romans, Selene and Artemis by the Greeks.)
